Choice Camps Recommendation of 360 Student Travel: Dominican Republic Adult Community Service
Throughout the past 27 years, 360˚ Student Travel, a division of Westcoast Connection, has become one of the premiere teen travel providers in the world. With teen-focused itineraries that provide the perfect mix of fun, adventure, learning, and relaxation, 360˚ Student Travel programs are great for teens with a variety of interests and ambitions. 360˚ Student Travel trips are founded on the philosophy of respecting the individual while also creating a bonded group – a principle the company calls “each and every.”
Regardless of travel style, all 360˚ programs are created with the understanding that no matter what you want to accomplish during the summer, the challenges and experiences should be enjoyable as well as rewarding. By moving outside of their comfort zone, 360˚ tour members experience different cultures and new adventures that encourage self development, group bonding, and an unparalleled sense of discovery.
Trip Description
Volunteers are greatly needed to work with the underprivileged children of the Dominican Republic. Spend time accompanying them in their classrooms or after school activities; teach English; provide homework assistance; and coach sports and interactive games. The children treasure the one to one attention our volunteers provide.
The people of the Dominican Republic are surely some of the friendliest people in the Caribbean. This country hosts a multi-racial and multi-cultural society of over eight and a half million people, with three quarters of mixed origin and the other quarter of either European or African descent.
Staff Overview
360˚ Student Travel interviews each staff candidate face-to-face during the hiring process. 360˚ staff members are hired for their expertise in specific areas – you’ll find that staff members who lead each trip have relevant, extensive backgrounds and experiences. Each 360˚ Student Travel tour is headed by a trip leader who is typically in their late 20’s or early 30’s. Trip leaders are supported by staff in their early 20’s.
Setting & Accommodations
The Dominican Republic, West Indies, is located on the eastern two thirds of the island of Hispaniola. Its capital and largest city is Santo Domingo. The country suffers from marked income inequality; the poorest half of the population receives less than one-fifth of GNP, while the richest 10% enjoys nearly 40% of national income.
Safety Standards
All 360˚ Student Travel staff members take part in an extensive assortment of orientation workshops that train them in the program philosophy and procedures. Every 360˚ staff member is certified in first aid and CPR. All programs involving water activities include a certified life guard on staff at all times.
Because most 360˚ programs have been running for many years, every staff member knows key physicians and medical facilities along their route in case of illness or emergency. Each trip also has a medical representative in charge of distributing prescription medicine to campers who require it.
As a final safety precaution, 360˚ employs several program supervisors who personally check-in throughout each trip and meet with the campers and staff. Updates are relayed to 360˚’s offices that are open seven days a week to keep parents and company representatives informed of any situations that may arise.
