Choice Camps Recommendation of Aloha Camp
Aloha Camp is a traditional sleep-away camp for girls in grades 6-10 who love living simply in nature, learning new skills, and making life-long friendships. You won’t find any cell phones, computers, or iPods at Aloha – instead, campers focus on the beauty of nature and bonding within a tight-knit community.
With a history that dates back to 1905, campers have been spending their summers at Aloha Camp for more than 100 years. Aloha Camp is part of the Aloha Foundation family of camps, an organization that has been ranked in the top ten nationally by USA Today and Family Life magazines. For girls looking for a caring community where every camper discovers her personal strengths and best self, Aloha Camp may be a great fit.
Program Description
Aloha Camp offers a wide variety of water sports, land sports, music, art, hiking, canoe trips, and a whole host of special activities. Campers at Aloha choose the activities they wish to participate in each day. Campers can sample many different activities or focus on one or two areas of interest.
Activities with Aloha’s brother and sister camps add another fun dimension to the summer. Day hikes and overnight trips 3-5 days long offer campers many opportunities to enjoy the Vermont countryside.
Staff Overview
Most Aloha counselors and staff members are college undergraduates or graduates who come from all across the country and from many nations around the world.
Aloha counselors and staff receive intensive training before camp opens, and undergo background checks by an independent agency prior to hiring. Most have advanced expertise in their chosen activity or field.
Setting & Accommodations
At Aloha, girls live in "tent families" with one counselor and 2-4 other campers of their own grade/age. Tents and cabins are grouped in small living units across a grassy hillside. Tent families provide a supportive home-away-from-home, and units are small communities within the larger camp community. Great care is taken to match children and counselors to provide an optimal, supportive experience.
Safety Standards
Aloha Camp is staffed 24 hours a day with appropriate health personnel. A physician is on call at all times and EMT service is within minutes of camp. In case of a more serious illness or emergency, the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center is located 20 minutes from camp.
Aloha Camp is accredited by the American Camp Association and meets more than 300 safety standards set forth by the organization.
