Choice Camps Recommendation of Aloha Hive
Set under pine trees on the shore of Lake Fairlee, Aloha Hive is a traditional summer camp for girls in grades 1-6. Through a variety of land, water, and individual activities, campers explore new interests and discover new strengths in a supportive camp community. You won’t find any cell phones, computers, or iPods at Aloha Hive – instead, campers focus on the beauty of nature and bonding with each other.
Aloha Hive is part of the Aloha Foundation family of camps, an organization that has been ranked in the top ten nationally by USA Today and Family Life magazines. For girls looking for a joyful, fun-loving place to begin discovering the young women they want to become, Aloha Hive may be a great fit.
Program Description
Designed specifically to meet the needs of young girls, Aloha Hive is a warm, nurturing place where each camper can feel at home and learn to be her best self. Campers choose their activities daily from a wide selection of options. A typical day usually includes four different activities including water sports, land sports, arts, and more. Counselors help campers to identify their goals and create a plan for success.
In addition to on-site activities, Aloha Hive campers explore the Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine countryside through a variety of wilderness trips.
Staff Overview
Over 80 staff members create a nurturing, safe environment in which approximately 140 young girls learn about independence and community living under the guidance of college-age role models. Most Aloha counselors and staff members are college undergraduates or graduates who come from all across the country and from many nations around the world.
Aloha counselors and staff receive intensive training before camp opens, and undergo background checks by an independent agency prior to hiring. Most have advanced expertise in their chosen activity or field.
Setting & Accommodations
One counselor and three campers of the same age or grade live in a "tent family". Campers and counselors are matched carefully so that children can learn from one another and have an enriching summer experience. Tent families enjoy canoe breakfasts and overnights, playing together during free time, and forming a supportive summer "family.”
Safety Standards
Aloha Hive is staffed 24 hours a day with appropriate health personnel. A physician is on call at all times and EMT service is within minutes of camp. In case of a more serious illness or emergency, the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center is located 20 minutes from camp.
Aloha Hive is accredited by the American Camp Association and meets more than 300 safety standards set forth by the organization.
