Choice Camps Recommendation of Broadreach: Honduras Eco-Adventure

Since 1993, Broadreach has been a leader in worldwide summer adventure education for teens. While each Broadreach program has its own special blend of activities and learning, all share a common philosophy and characteristics - small group size, personal growth within a team, hands-on education, skill building with a learn-by-doing approach, cultural immersion, leadership opportunities, and at least one community service project. Of course, unique adventures, close friendships, and new experiences are also part of every Broadreach experience.

Broadreach students travel to incredible places off the beaten path that have been carefully scouted and integrated into the Broadreach program. Each trip is designed to make the most of a given destination, and all locations maximize cultural, educational, and skill building opportunities. Broadreach’s extensive experience gives the organization distinct advantages with respect to staff training, course design, risk management, and safety. For students looking for a summer experience where every day is fun and adventurous, Broadreach may be the perfect choice.

Trip Description

Looking for the perfect mix of spectacular diving, whitewater adventure, friendly people and Latin American culture? On this popular hands-on journey, travel through Honduras' rolling countryside, tropical jungles and mountainous Bay Islands for the experience of a lifetime! Often compared to the unspoiled Costa Rica of 15-20 years ago, the treasures of this amazing country are yours to discover. Wake up to the rich smell of a coffee plantation and the exciting sounds of class IV river rapids. Explore lush rainforests as you zip line through the canopy with local naturalists. SCUBA dive on Utila's magnificent reefs, walls, wrecks and pinnacles where scientists come together to study whale sharks, dolphins, reef conservation and marine ecology. Throughout your adventures, experience the rich and diverse Honduran culture from the ancient Maya to coastal Garifuna people.

Staff Overview

From sailing captains and PADI SCUBA instructors to teachers, marine biologists, and experiential education professionals, Broadreach leaders all come with solid experience and a genuine desire to work with teenagers. There are two main leaders for every trip, plus additional staff and outfitters who join the group to bring expertise for specific activities or areas of exploration.

All Broadreach staff members participate in pre-program training that includes 80 hours of emergency medical training for course instructors. Broadreach staff members have an average age of 26.

Setting & Accommodations

On the mainland travelers stay in hostels, colorful haciendas, in the guest quarters of a family farm, in rustic cabins and in tents under a rainforest canopy at the edge of the river. On the bay island of Utila, students live at a small private lodge on the edge of a white sand, palm fringed beach! The lodge is only accessible by boat and the Caribbean Sea is just steps from your balcony.

Safety Standards

At least one staff member on each Broadreach trip has completed Wilderness First Responder or Emergency Medical Technician training.

Broadreach is a fully accredited PADI (Professional Association of Dive Instructors) Five Star Gold Palm facility offering the most comprehensive dive training programs available to teenagers. Broadreach is also accredited by the American Sailing Association, International Yacht Training, DAN Partners in Dive Safety, and USA Waterski.
