Choice Camps Recommendation of Broadreach: Underwater Discoveries
Since 1993, Broadreach has been a leader in worldwide summer adventure education for teens. While each Broadreach program has its own special blend of activities and learning, all share a common philosophy and characteristics - small group size, personal growth within a team, hands-on education, skill building with a learn-by-doing approach, cultural immersion, leadership opportunities, and at least one community service project. Of course, unique adventures, close friendships, and new experiences are also part of every Broadreach experience.
Broadreach students travel to incredible places off the beaten path that have been carefully scouted and integrated into the Broadreach program. Each trip is designed to make the most of a given destination, and all locations maximize cultural, educational, and skill building opportunities. Broadreach’s extensive experience gives the organization distinct advantages with respect to staff training, course design, risk management, and safety. For students looking for a summer experience where every day is fun and adventurous, Broadreach may be the perfect choice.
Trip Description
Have you ever spent an hour under the sea exploring a coral reef? Felt the freedom of life aboard a sailing yacht? Met the morning with a plunge overboard? Get ready for an incredible experience because this is only a taste of the adventure.
Broadreach’s most popular program blends SCUBA and sail training with island exploration and adventure. Imagine cruising aboard a catamaran yacht, island hopping across the Caribbean’s French and Dutch West Indies with a crew of 12 teens your age. Discover the magic of SCUBA on coral reefs teeming with life. Throw in the Bob Marley CD, hoist the anchor and take the helm as you learn to sail on crystal blue waters. Hike across a volcanic crater and into a mountain rainforest. Enjoy an afternoon relaxing on a perfect white sand beach or challenge your crewmates to a friendly game of beach volleyball. Hop into your ski boat and try wakeboarding or tubing. Best of all, no experience is necessary, just a desire to try new things and work hard in a team. Get set for an amazing summer!
Staff Overview
From sailing captains and PADI SCUBA instructors to teachers, marine biologists, and experiential education professionals, Broadreach leaders all come with solid experience and a genuine desire to work with teenagers. There are two main leaders for every trip, plus additional staff and outfitters who join the group to bring expertise for specific activities or areas of exploration.
All Broadreach staff members participate in pre-program training that includes 80 hours of emergency medical training for course instructors. Broadreach staff members have an average age of 26.
Setting & Accommodations
Broadreach’s Underwater Discoveries Advanced program uses 45-50 foot catamaran yachts. The catamaran's stable platform is great for novice sailors and perfect for lots of diving and SCUBA training. There are four to six cabins on the yacht, but everyone prefers to sleep out on deck each night to enjoy the cool trade winds under brilliant Caribbean skies.
Each yacht has either four or five "heads," as bathrooms are called on boats. Students are in the ocean all the time, so most of your showers will be quick "boat showers" off the back of the yacht to conserve the limited supply of fresh water.
Safety Standards
At least one staff member on each Broadreach trip has completed Wilderness First Responder or Emergency Medical Technician training.
Broadreach is a fully accredited PADI (Professional Association of Dive Instructors) Five Star Gold Palm facility offering the most comprehensive dive training programs available to teenagers. Broadreach is also accredited by the American Sailing Association, International Yacht Training, DAN Partners in Dive Safety, and USA Waterski.
