Through their Sports Enrichment Program, Brookwood promotes fair play and individual confidence. Campers have the option to join leagues, tournaments and compete in inter-camp events.

Program Description

Brookwood Camps offers a structured camp program with room for free-choice activities. The activities feature a good mix of sports, waterfront, individual, and arts activities. Every afternoon campers have one free-choice period and a period called “free play” where they can choose what they want to do. All of Brookwood’s facilities are lit for night play.

Brookwood Camps also offers private one-on-one instruction for campers looking to improve their game. Campers can choose to work one-on-one with instructors after lunch and during free periods. The camp is even known to bring in professional and NCAA players and coaches to work with campers and conduct workshops. Past celebrity guests have included New York Jets Quarterback Jay Fielder, St. John’s Basketball Head Coach Norm Roberts, Baltimore Orioles Pitching Coach Leo Mazzone, and more.

While Brookwood Camps is not a formal Jewish camp, campers do get to experience a Friday night Shabbat service each week. Jewish dietary laws are observed throughout the week, but the program is not augmented for the Sabbath.

Staff Overview

Brookwood Camps features an older staff headed by professional educators from elementary, junior high, high school, and college. These instructors serve as leaders in key departments and activities throughout camp. The senior staff is supported by college-age counselors who live in bunks with the campers. The average staff age is 22.

Setting & Accommodations

Brookwood Camps is located on 160 acres of park-like property overlooking spring-fed Lake Lochada. The camp is located in Glen Spey, New York and is less than two hours from New York City.

Campers live in newly renovated bunks with electricity, bathrooms, and showers. Bunks are grouped by age with 8-10 campers and 2-3 counselors in each cabin. The camp maintenance staff cleans the bathroom facilities daily.

Meals at Brookwood are served family style by camp waiters and waitresses. The camp menu is designed with the nutritional needs of young campers in mind. Jewish dietary laws are observed and campers enjoy a small Shabbat service on Friday nights.

Safety Standards

Brookwood Camps’ modern health center is staffed 24 hours a day by a New York State Licensed Physician and 3-4 registered nurses. The camp’s Head Medical Director, Doctor Vincent R. Bonagura, is currently the chief of pediatric allergy and immunology at Long Island Jewish Hospital and is considered one of the outstanding doctors in New York State.

The Brookwood waterfront staff is comprised of American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certified lifeguards.

Brookwood Camps is licensed by the New York State Department of Health and the New York State Camp Directors Association.
