Choice Camps Recommendation of Bucks Rock Camp
Buck's Rock Performing & Creative Arts Camp is the summer home to approximately 350 boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 16, per session. With professionally-equipped studios, state-of-the-art recording facilities, and a theater that can rival many on Broadway, Buck's Rock is a place where creative expression and self-discovery thrive.
Universally recognized as one of the country's best performing and creative arts camps, Buck's Rock is a great choice for first-time campers and veterans alike. The supportive, non-competitive environment fosters a strong sense of community between campers of all ages and ability levels. Unlike most programs, parents and family are encouraged to visit throughout the summer to watch performances and lessons, view their child’s work in progress, and, on Festival Day, to bear witness to so many collective accomplishments on and off the stage.
With dozens of activities that go far beyond just the arts, Buck's Rock Camp is a great choice for campers who are passionate about trying new things, finding their voice, and experiencing the exhilaration of endeavor and accomplishment.
Program Description
Freedom of choice is the hallmark of the Buck's Rock program. The camp believes that to act and work creatively, campers should be able to choose their activities and be allowed the time they need. As a result, all of the activities at Buck's Rock are always open; campers can spend anywhere from a few minutes to a few weeks at their activities of choice. Best of all, campers are never 'closed out' of certain activities due to space limitations; accommodations are always made to include every camper who wants to participate.
In addition to traditional on-site activities, Buck's Rock offers a variety of opportunities to appreciate art outside of camp. Off-site trips include museum and gallery visits, theatre performances, and music festivals. These trips provide inspiration and more teaching opportunities that simply can't be found anywhere else.
Staff Overview
Buck's Rock Camp offers an impressive camper-to-staff ratio of 2:1. This helps staff members foster meaningful relationships with campers as they guide them towards their goals throughout the summer. Buck's Rock staff members are at least 21 years of age and often return to camp year-after-year to carry on traditions and friendships.
Camper living areas are supervised by guidance counselors (general counselors) who reside with campers and provide leadership and encouragement. Art studios and performance departments are staffed by experienced instructors: talented artists, teachers, and craftspeople who are passionate about both camp and their area of expertise.
Setting & Accommodations
Buck's Rock Camp is located on 125 acres of deeply wooded forest in New Milford, Connecticut. The camp's location makes it easily accessible from regional cities like New York, Philadelphia, Boston, and Washington DC. Campers also travel from locations around the globe to take part in the summer fun.
Campers are housed in comfortable quarters typically shared by groups of four. The rooms, many of which were recently renovated, are closely located to bathrooms and showers.
Meals at Buck's Rock are served buffet-style, and campers can sit with whomever they choose. The breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus are carefully prepared and feature a variety of healthy, kid-friendly choices. Vegetarian options are always available and dietary needs can be accommodated.
Safety Standards
Buck's Rock Camp has a well-equipped on-site Health Center and infirmary staffed 24 hours a day by 2-3 registered nurses and nurse assistants. All medical care is supervised by a camp physician who is available six days a week. In the event of an emergency, the New Milford Hospital is located just two miles from camp.
Buck's Rock Camp is accredited by the American Camp Association and meets more than 300 safety standards set forth by the organization.
