Choice Camps Recommendation of Camp Avoda
Camp Avoda is a traditional summer camp for Jewish boys located on Lake Tispaquin in Middleboro, Massachusetts. Avoda is best known for having a small, close-knit community where everyone knows everyone else. Since its founding in 1927, the mission of Camp Avoda has been to provide a safe, wholesome atmosphere where a boy can happily learn, share and grow with his fellow campers.
One very unique aspect of the camp is that all bunk counselors are former campers who have grown up at Avoda. Avoda counselors truly understand the experience of being a camper and carry on many wonderful traditions that make Avoda special. Steeped in tradition, Camp Avoda is a great place for campers to embrace Jewish cultural values while enjoying the summer of a lifetime.
Program Description
Camp Avoda is known for balanced program offerings with many opportunities for both learning and fun. Campers enjoy water sports, crafts, and athletics. With a small camp size, campers can expect to receive one-on-one attention in all activities areas. Above all, the Avoda program stresses proper instruction, skilling building, learning, and good sportsmanship.
Every Thursday campers go on off-site trips to regional destinations and attractions. As a Jewish camp, Avoda observes Shabbat on Friday nights and Saturday mornings with a service designed for camp.
Staff Overview
Camp Avoda is particularly unique because more than 95% of the staff is comprised of former campers. The camp’s senior counselors are college age Avoda alumni who have graduated from the rigorous Counselor-In-Training program. Avoda counselors pass on many special traditions year after year to the campers.
Avoda’s administrative staff consists of trained professionals in the fields of education, child psychology and health care.
Setting & Accommodations
Camp Avoda is located in Middleboro, Massachusetts, a town known for being a gateway to Cape Cod. The camp is less than an hour south of Boston and less than an hour northeast of Providence.
Avoda campers and counselors are housed in traditional camp cabins with modern bathroom and shower facilities. Campers are placed together based on the grade they are entering in the upcoming school year. Most cabins house 10 campers and 3 counselors.
During family-style meals, Avoda offers a variety of kid friendly kosher options in the “mess hall.” Campers sit with their bunkmates and take turns with serving duties.
