Choice Camps Recommendation of Camp Bauercrest

Located on the shores of Lake Attitash in Amesbury, Massachusetts, Camp Bauercrest is an all-boys Jewish sleep away camp that promotes well-rounded lifelong values and skills. Sports and competition are the foundation on which the camp promotes their “STAR” concept of sportsmanship, teamwork, achievement, and responsibility.

Camp Bauercrest features a sports program supported by art and cultural activities. With top-notch fields, courts, and indoor facilities, Bauercrest campers get instruction using modern equipment and techniques. At least half of each camper’s day is devoted to organized intra-league sports and electives. Even with the athletic focus, Bauercrest provides a nurturing environment where young men are encouraged to pursue a variety of activities and skills. With shorter 2 week options for first-time campers and extended 4 and 8 week programs for veterans, Camp Bauercrest is a great option for Jewish boys looking to grow athletically and culturally.

Program Description

The Camp Bauercrest program centers around three general activities: sports, waterfront, and arts. The program features an even balance of free choice and assigned activity periods. Campers typically attend three free-choice and three assigned periods each day.

Founded in 1931 by four Jewish Community Centers, Camp Bauercrest maintains a religious component throughout camp including kosher food, daily prayers before and after meals, and weekend Shabbat services. A full-time camp rabbi oversees a Judean program for the campers.

Staff Overview

The entire Bauercrest staff participates in a week-long training session before campers arrive. Counselors range in age from 17 (counselors in training) through post-college. The average staff age is 21. Bauercrest recruits counselors from across the United States, Israel, and Europe. Nearly 95% of the Bauercrest staff are former campers.

Setting & Accommodations

Campers are housed in traditional cabins with an average of 11 campers and 3 staff members. Each cabin has three sinks and two toilet stalls – all of which are modern and recently renovated. Modern locker-room style shower facilities are located in three primary locations near the campers’ living areas.

Bauercrest features a kosher-style kitchen where meals are served family style. All meats are kosher and the camp does not serve shellfish of any kind. The kid-friendly menu features hot and cold entrées with alternatives that include a pasta and salad bar.

Safety Standards

Camp Bauercrest has an on-site air conditioned health center staffed by two registered nurses 24 hours a day. A physician is also on-call and visits camp at least three times each week. In case of an emergency, Anna Jaques Hospital is located less than 15 minutes from camp.

The Camp Bauercrest waterfront is manned by lifeguards who are Water Safety Instructor certified by the American Red Cross. In addition, waterfront counselors are certified Lifeguard Training Instructors through the Red Cross.

Camp Bauercrest is accredited by the American Camp Association and meets more than 300 safety standards set forth by the organization.
