Choice Camps Recommendation of Camp Chateaugay
Nestled on the scenic north shore of one of the great Adirondack Lakes, Camp Chateaugay’s captivating wilderness is a playground to campers of all abilities. With a wide range of sports, creative arts activities, and trips, there is always an opportunity to try something new or master something you’re already passionate about.
Camp Chateaugay is best known for exceptional instructors and counselors who encourage self-discovery and promote self-esteem. The Chateaugay staff is made up of parents and teachers who are experts with children and summer camp. Some instructors are even former professional athletes, ensuring each camper access to the best instruction in every activity field.
Program Description
The Camp Chateaugay program is a mixture of free choice electives and structured schedule. Each day, two activity periods are designated by the camp (three periods for younger campers). Campers move through these assigned activities with their cabin mates. After their pre-scheduled activities, campers are given 3-4 electives each day depending on age. Campers choose these electives at the beginning of each week.
Camp Chateaugay’s experienced instructors train campers to excel at their chosen activities. Chateaugay often hosts inter-camp events such as swim meets and athletic tournaments. This gives campers an opportunity to showcase their skills against peers at other facilities.
Staff Overview
Among Camp Chateaugay’s biggest assets is a mature staff of senior unit leaders supported by college-age counselors. Unit leaders are typically coaches and teachers who have many years of camping experience. In addition, some activity leaders are former professional athletes who work to cultivate each camper’s skills and abilities.
Camp Chateaugay boasts a 2.5:1 camper-to-counselor ratio. The average staff age is 23 and counselors must complete at least one year of college prior to their employment. Before campers arrive, the entire staff undergoes a ten day orientation program to prepare for each session.
Setting & Accommodations
Camp Chateaugay is located in the northern Adirondack Mountains on the shores of Upper Chateaugay Lake. The camp includes a ¼ mile stretch of lakefront and more than 50 beautiful acres of land.
