Choice Camps Recommendation of Camp Danbee
Camp Danbee is an all-girls summer camp located on spring-fed Lake Ashmere in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts. Danbee offers girls a well-rounded, comprehensive, and instructionally-oriented program. The camp’s skilled and enthusiastic staff of specialized instructors helps campers to improve their abilities whether in the pool, on the soccer field, in gymnastics, in art, at dance, on the lake, or on stage.
Any Danbee camper can tell you that the camp is defined by a special spirit that is displayed through a mixture of smiles, hugs, cheers, tears, dancing, and energy all rolled into one. The Danbee spirit is so magical that more than 90% of Danbee girls return year after year. With top-notch instruction, excellent facilities, and experienced staff, Danbee is truly a “girl’s world” of fun, adventure, and learning.
Program Description
Each camper at Danbee has choice in their daily schedule. Younger girls (finishing 1st through 4th grade) have a limited amount of choice, as they are encouraged to take advantage of everything the camp offers. Senior campers (finishing 5th through 9th grade) have a completely individual, choice-based program. All girls are required to participate in a full schedule, but choice gives them the opportunity to focus on and enjoy their favorite activities. The program provides girls with diverse abilities and interests the opportunity to thrive.
Danbee's program is designed to enable every girl to feel successful. The program allows campers with diverse athletic, fine art, dance, gymnastic and aquatic abilities to grow and learn new skills throughout the summer. Danbee doesn’t have tryouts or “A” and “B” teams. Girls who are interested have the opportunity to participate in inter-camp games throughout the summer.
Staff Overview
There are approximately 125 bunk counselors living in the cabins with the campers, who also teach classes in one or two specific program areas. There are many non-bunk staff at camp, such as administrators and program directors, a medical staff consisting of five nurses and a doctor, office staff, dining hall staff and support staff.
Staff members arrive at camp week before campers for an intensive orientation program. Each staff member is given the tools and ideas they will need for their specific dealings with camper issues during the summer.
Setting & Accommodations
Camp Danbee is located in Western Massachusetts in the small New England town of Hinsdale. The camp is set in the beautiful Berkshire Mountains, on Lake Ashmere. The site is located three hours from the New York/New Jersey Metropolitan area, and two hours from Boston.
Danbee’s spacious cabins house 8 – 10 girls and three staff members. Each bunk includes its own shower and bathroom facility. Newly constructed wooden beds and extra large cubbies allow plenty of space for each camper. Pine floors and walls give the cabins a clean and homey feel.
Danbee's menu is designed to appeal to girls. The camp’s food service and chefs provide a large variety of nutritious and well-prepared selections and alternatives. Three large salad bars and a daily pasta selection are offered at both lunch and dinner. Snacks during the day and at bedtime include fresh fruit, homemade cookies, and ice-cream novelties.
Safety Standards
Danbee's health care staff consists of five nurses and a physician that cover the camp’s health center seven days a week and 24 hours a day. Local physicians attend to campers who need to see a specialist. Danbee’s doctors are affiliated with the Berkshire Medical Center, a satellite hospital of UMASS Medical, located 15 minutes from camp.
Camp Danbee is accredited by the American Camp Association and meets more than 300 safety standards set forth by the organization.
