Choice Camps Recommendation of Camp Echo
Camp Echo is located on 200 beautiful acres of fields, trails, and lakes in Burlingham, New York. The camp’s surroundings provide the perfect setting for trotting horses, rowing boats, riding bikes, hiking trails, and making new friends. With top-notch experienced staff and modern facilities, Camp Echo is among the finest sleep-away camps in the northeast.
Camp Echo takes a “discovery through doing” approach that encourages kids to try new things and make informed decisions. The camp celebrates effort – not achievement – in all elements of camp life. Campers can feel comfortable trying new things because there are no grades, comparisons, or reputations. Because all campers wear Echo gear every day, there are no judgments based on appearance or style. Both first-time campers and veterans can leave Camp Echo feeling good about themselves and their capabilities.
Program Description
The Camp Echo program is based around “progression” – as campers mature they gain responsibility, earn privileges and are allowed to choose more activities. Campers attend four activity periods and two electives each day. After dinner, the entire camp takes part in evening activities that range from theater performances to camp-wide games.
The camp promotes a philosophy of "healthy competition" throughout its athletic programs. Every camper “makes the team” as long as they practice and maintain sportsmanship, cooperation, and self-confidence. Although some campers choose to compete on teams against other camps, competition takes a back seat to individual progress and effort.
For campers who want more specialization in their favorite activity, Camp Echo offers Artist-in-Residence and Athlete-in-Residence programs where professionals share their talents and with campers during an extended stay.
Staff Overview
Camp Echo’s staff is made up of college students and professionals with youth education and camp experience. The staff represents more than 25 states and 15 countries. The camp specifically targets older staff members and conducts face-to-face interviews with all candidates.
Except during electives, cabin counselors stay with their campers at all times. Counselors try to cultivate a “family” feeling amongst their campers by creating a warm, accepting, and comfortable environment.
Camp Echo is owned and operated by the Grabow family from Ridgewood, New Jersey. As parents of two children, the family is passionate about summer camp and providing the best experience for every child.
Setting & Accommodations
Camp Echo is situated on 200 acres of rolling hills surrounded by a private lake in lower Upstate New York. The camp features exceptional activity and living facilities as the Grabow family continually find ways to improve the site. Located under two hours from New York City, Camp Echo is a comfortable distance for families living anywhere on the east coast.
Camp Echo just completed a project to refurbish all of the cabins around camp – all of which have bathrooms and showers built in. The camp is divided into a “girl’s village” and “boy’s village” to accommodate each gender. Echo’s cabins typically house 8-12 campers and 3-4 staff members.
Camp Echo’s menu is designed by a nutritionist to offer a well-rounded, healthy, and tasty selection for all campers. Main courses are eaten family-style and campers always have additional options like yogurt, salad, and pasta bars. Camp Moms are on hand at each meal to ensure that all campers are being properly nourished.
Safety Standards
Camp Echo has an on-site health staff that lives at camp 24 hours a day. The staff includes a full-time doctor, two registered nurses, and a pediatric nurse practitioner.
All waterfront staff members are lifeguard trained and all staff are CPR trained. To ensure a safe environment, campers don’t go anywhere on-site unless they’re escorted by a Camp Echo staff member.
Camp Echo is accredited by the American Camp Association and meets more than 300 safety standards set forth by the organization.
