Choice Camps Recommendation of Camp Glen Brook
Camp Glen Brook is a traditional summer sleep-away camp located in Marlborough, Massachusetts. The camp is sponsored by the Waldorf School of Garden City, an organization known for a holistic approach to education and an emphasis on the spiritual core of each human being. At the core of all Glen Brook activities is a belief in the inherent need in the human spirit to connect with one another and the natural world through work and play; to work creatively for both artistic pleasure and to solve problems of social importance; and to project a sense of compassion and responsibility toward all living things. For families looking for a unique, holistic approach to traditional summer camps, Glen Brook is a one-of-a-kind program that should be a great match.
Program Description
Glen Brook offers a well-rounded summer camp experience. Campers participate in a whole host of activities in sports, arts and crafts, hiking and canoeing, and nature activities. Campers are allowed to choose more activities as they get older. Wednesday is a trip day and Sunday is a quieter and lazier day without activities. One evening is set aside for folk dancing and Saturday evening is a time for sharing skits, music and stories.
Staff Overview
Glen Brook’s staff is a mix of experienced teachers, parents and enthusiastic college students. Most senior staffers have been at Glen Brook for years. About 20% of the camp’s counselors are international visitors from around the world.
Counselors are selected first and foremost because they love to teach children and have been successful doing so. They are strong individuals whom campers can look to for guidance and friendship and admire as role models. The staff receives ongoing training in teaching effectiveness, camper behavior issues, cabin management, emergency procedures and physical and emotional child safety issues.
Glen Brook also features an artist-in-residence program that seeks to bring emerging artists to the camp. Artists are camp counselors first, but they teach fewer classes so that they have time to work on their art throughout the day.
Setting & Accommodations
Glen Brook’s farm and garden includes a total of 250 acres of land – approximately two acres of which are cultivated as biodynamic and organic gardens, 150 acres of forest land for recreational use and timber harvest, and the remaining acreage in open hay fields. The camp is located about 2 hours northwest of Boston and
Campers live in groups of 6-8 with counselors in farmhouses or a cabin. All quarters have bathrooms with hot showers.
Camp Glen Brook offer wholesome meals served family-style, usually made from high quality, fresh ingredients rather than prepared foods. The camp always offers a tasty vegetarian alternative. Candy, soda, and junk food are very rare and packages from home are screened.
Safety Standards
Camp Glen Brook has a residential nurse who oversees the health care of the camp. An 80-physician clinic and hospital are just 12 minutes away in Keene. Many families prefer alternative medicine and the camp can work with a naturopathic physician in Keene if parents prefer.
