Choice Camps Recommendation of Camp Greenbrier for Boys

With a camping heritage that dates back to 1898, Camp Greenbrier for Boys is the oldest privately owned summer camp in the United States. The camp provides a safe, positive, environment where campers can have fun, gain independence, improve their self-confidence, and learn to live unselfishly with others.

A highlight at Camp Greenbrier for Boys is the Woodcraft program, which has remained virtually unchanged since the early 1900’s. With hikes to Keeney’s Knob and Pollock’s Cave, campers get to experience many of the region’s scenic and exciting features that have attracted campers for more than a century.

Program Description

Camp Greenbrier offers a mix of free choice electives and structured programming for campers. Each morning campers select three free-choice activities to participate in that day. During the afternoon, campers take part in a structured program featuring field sports, individual activities, swimming, and water sports. After dinner, there are typically camp-wide events such as capture the flag, talent shows, and more.

Activities are supervised by Greenbrier staff members who award achievement points when campers show skill improvements. At the end of each session, the camp holds an awards ceremony to honor campers for their achievements.

For older teens, The Camp Greenbrier for Boys Leadership Academy is a physically and intellectually challenging alternative to the typical camp experience. During the experience, campers learn what it takes to be a leader with skills range from pioneering to cooking. Campers develop a mission statement and set short term, intermediate, and long term goals. The experience is highly rewarding and teaches campers important skills they will use throughout their lives. The Leadership Academy is offered for boys 16-18 or who have completed the 10th grade.

Staff Overview

Most counselors at Greenbrier are college students, many of whom attended the camp as children. All counselors go through an intensive week-long training period before camp starts. The camp boasts an impressive 70% return rate amongst staff members. Senior Counselors are at least 18 years old.

Greenbrier has been owned and operated by the same family since 1948. The family’s involvement with the camp spans three generations, with camp director Will Harvie heading up operations since 1997.
