Choice Camps Recommendation of Camp Hawkeye
Camp Hawkeye is a traditional overnight camp located in Moultonborough, New Hampshire. At Hawkeye, campers are encouraged to explore their natural curiosity in a rustic mountain setting. Founded on the belief that every child deserves a summer camp experience, Camp Hawkeye promotes an environment that includes campers and staff from a myriad of backgrounds, income levels, and countries of origin. With those ideals in mind, Camp Hawkeye is committed to a program that balances diversity, builds community, and develops leadership skills.
Program Description
The Camp Hawkeye program features a combination of structured and free choice activities. On a daily basis the Hawkeye program is centered upon the cabin group. Cabin groups attend activities together, have daily "cabin time" during which they may relax, plan a trip, or work on a camp project together. The daily schedule also has time built in for campers to branch out and spend time away from their cabin group during choice periods.
Camp Hawkeye runs a trip-based program where a central part of each week is an out-of-camp wilderness adventure tip. These are primarily day hiking trips but can include day canoeing trips and multi-day trips of either kind. Campers are taught basic hiking and canoeing skills so everyone can participate in the trip program.
A large component of the Camp Hawkeye experience is the tribes program. Tribes are large groups that include both genders and campers of all ages sorted by a random drawing. Campers compete in weekly tribe events throughout the summer.
Staff Overview
Camp Hawkeye counselors come from all across the United States, as well as from places like England, Scotland, Czech Republic, Netherlands, and Spain. The staff ranges in age from 17 to 43 with an average age of 21. Many Hawkeye counselors are teachers and relish the free learning environment that Hawkeye offers.
Setting & Accommodations
Camp Hawkeye is situated on 50 acres of forest, meadow, and waterfront. The camp is located 2 hours north of Boston and 2 hours west of Portland, Maine.
Hawkeye campers and staff live in rustic cabins. These are simple wooden structures, all with electricity, and finished with traditional weather-worn planking. The cabins vary in size and accommodate a range of 12 to 14 campers and 2-4 counselors. All cabins have their own shower, toilet and sink. Campers are grouped by gender and age.
The Dining Hall, part of the center of camp, is a rustic, high-ceilinged building with beautiful polished wood appointments. It has screening on three sides that looks out over the hill, down upon the main athletic field, and out onto the picturesque lake, and makes for a sunny and open feeling.
Safety Standards
Camp Hawkeye has a well-stocked infirmary staffed 24 hours a day by a live-in registered nurse. For more serious illnesses or injuries, a pediatrician is less than 10 minutes from camp and a hospital is a short drive away.
