Choice Camps Recommendation of Camp Hilltop
Located in Hancock, New York on more than 100 acres of rolling hills and green pastures, Camp Hilltop offers a traditional summer camp experience for boys and girls age 6-16. The non-competitive Hilltop program offers a structured environment where children can live, play, and work with positive role models who listen, talk, relax, and reflect. It is through the fun and challenging activities that campers learn to work together, make choices, take responsibility, develop creative thinking skills, and gain confidence-building independence and self-reliance.
Camp Hilltop projects a palpable sense of family – campers live in a community surrounded with great opportunity for building new friendships - but not so big that any camper feels lost or overwhelmed. The strength of the Hilltop community is confirmed by a camper return rate that exceeds 80%. With a wide array of activities, trips, and special events, Camp Hilltop is a great place to build friendships and enjoy the summer of a lifetime.
Program Description
The non-competitive Camp Hilltop program offers a mixture of both free choice and assigned activities. There are five activity periods each day. Two 1-hour activities are assigned by the camp to give campers a chance to try all of the activities Hilltop has to offer. Campers attend these activities with their cabins. In addition, there are two 1.5 hour “intensive” activities that campers choose at the beginning of each week. During intensive activities, campers receive top-notch instruction from the Hilltop staff. These activities are group by ability level. Finally, campers have one 1.5 hour free choice activity each day.
Staff Overview
The average age of the Hilltop staff is 23 years old. Hilltop staff members must be at least 18 years old and complete one year of college before working at camp.
The Camp Hilltop staff undergoes a one-week orientation program before campers arrive on-site. Camp directors and specialists run certification courses and introduce counselors to issues children face and experience in our world today.
Setting & Accommodations
Campers live in traditional camp cabins that house 6-18 campers and 2-4 staff members. Cabins are well-maintained and have toilets, showers, electricity, and sinks.
The Camp Hilltop menu features a wide selection of kid-favorite meals. The camp offers vegetarian alternatives.
Safety Standards
Camp Hilltop has a Wellness Center staffed 24 hours a day by a registered nurse and nurse practitioner. In case of a serious emergency, the camp has AEDs on site.
Staff members receive first aid and CPR training during orientation. All lifeguards are American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certified.
Camp Hilltop is accredited by the American Camp Association and meets more than 300 safety standards set forth by the organization.
