Choice Camps Recommendation of Camp Kippewa
A classic woodland camp built in 1917, Camp Kippewa begins on one of Maine's rare sand beaches and continues up a gentle hillside to spectacular views of Lake Cobbosseecontee. It is here that girls find a safe, fun place to make friends, learn social, artistic, and athletic skills, and take steps towards the independence of adulthood.
Kippewa’s small size allows the directors to personally know the campers and their parents, and assures that the camp's many opportunities are readily available to every girl. Kippewa is large enough to have plenty of girls in every age group and to support a lavish activities program, and small enough so that everyone in camp gets to know everyone else. The combination of a relaxed ambiance with a focus on learning challenging activities makes Kippewa a great summer home for girls ages 6-15.
Program Description
Camp Kippewa features individualized scheduling that allows their campers to choose their activities. Each week, every camper chooses four new activities to attend for one-hour periods each day with other girls her age. One period each day is assigned and alternates between swimming lessons and team sports. Additional daily free choice periods are recreational, with a variety of activities open to girls of all ages.
Evening is a time for campfires, theatrical productions, skit and talent nights, treasure hunts, dance and gymnastics shows and special events, sometimes for a particular cabin, age group, or the camp as a whole.
In addition, campers enjoy ocean sailing trips, salt water beach days, wilderness hikes, and canoe trips at the nearby Maine coast, remote lakes, and Great North Woods mountains.
Staff Overview
As summer camp cabin counselors, Kippewa carefully selects college-age women whom parents would want their daughters to emulate. Warmth of personality, calmness, independence, quiet strength, inner confidence, and a strong work ethic are essential, along with teaching ability in several specialized activities. A minimum of one year of college is required for all staff members.
Our counselors are all hired in a combination role as specialists and as bunk counselors. Counselors teach classes throughout the day in one, two or more specific program areas. There are also several non-bunk staff jobs available, such as administrators and program directors, a medical nursing staff, office staff, dining hall staff and cleaning, maintenance and laundry staff.
