Choice Camps Recommendation of Camp Manitou

Camp Manitou is a traditional summer sleep-away camp located in Parrysound, Ontario, Canada. At Manitou there is a program that is right for every child's unique interests. Whether they are a team player, an individualist, social, creative, athletic or any combination, he or she will be cared for, respected and appreciated. The camp has an exceptional staff that has the ability to balance learning skills with fun and energy, creating a quality experience for campers at all levels of ability and interest.

Founded in 1959, Manitou is renowned for its ability to nurture and develop children's social and emotional growth. At Manitou, campers are able to create their own personal schedule from the 30 different sports, arts and outdoor adventure programs offered on a campground of over 100 acres. It is in this safe and accepting environment that children have an opportunity to develop lifetime friendships and deep personal bonds.

Program Description

The Camp Manitou program is a mixture of structure and free choice based on age. On the first day of camp, campers get a tour of all activity offerings. After touring the camp and meeting each activity leader, campers sit down with their counselors to pick the activities they wish to have on their schedule.

Manitous younger campers have a more structured schedule while older campers get more independent choices. Each camp day has five programming periods and one "open" time at the end of the day. Campers may choose to take an activity once every other day, once every day, or sometimes twice daily. The Manitou scheduling structure allows campers to participate in up to 10 different activities at a time. Counselors monitor each campers program throughout the summer to ensure progression, satisfaction, an overall positive camp experience.

Staff Overview

Most Manitou staff members are currently in a college or university program related to children's education or camping programs. Younger staff members are chosen only if they are proven CIT's and are grouped in a cabin with more mature staff members.

Counselors grouped with younger campers simply focus on their group and do not teach a specialty activity. Every activity has a senior staff member with a minimum age of 22 whose sole responsibility is to be an activity specialist.

All Manitou staff members go through an intense week of pre-camp training with sessions on camper issues that include topics like bullying, teasing, homesickness, and preventative rules regarding drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, theft, and health and safety issues.

Setting & Accommodations

Manitous cabins are rustic cedar buildings and many are located with a view of the lake. The camps cabins sleep 6-12 campers grouped by age. Campers typically sleep on bunk beds with high quality mattresses. All cabins have sinks, toilets, showers, and electricity.

Campers eat family style by bunk. The Manitou menu features a wide variety of entrees complimented by fresh baked goods, a salad bar, and alternative meals for those that do not like the main course served. Fruit is also available at every meal. The food is all prepared on premises and all breads and baked goods are homemade. Campers also have a snack in the afternoon and at bedtime.

Safety Standards

Camp Manitou features a modern infirmary staffed 24 hours a day by two full time registered nurses and a pediatrician. In the event of a more serious illness or emergency, the nearest hospital is less than 20 minutes from camp. Manitou also has a child psychologist and pediatric pharmacist on call and available for advice if necessary. All Manitou staff members are trained in first aid. Waterfront staff members are Bronze Cross certified. Camp Manitou is certified by the Ontario Camping Association who does an inspection of the camp every year.
