Choice Camps Recommendation of Camp Matoaka
Camp Matoaka is a traditional all-girls overnight camp located in Smithfield, Maine. Matoaka campers and counselors are, above all, enthusiastic. They sing songs at every meal, dress in crazy costumes for weekly campfires by the lake, paint their bodies in support of college league teams, celebrate individual achievements, and take great pride in Matoaka’s camping traditions. For girls looking for a great all-around camp experience with unmatched spirit, Camp Matoaka is the perfect place for adventure, friendship, and fun.
Program Description
Camp Matoaka offers five scheduled, instructional classes and two choice periods each day. The camp’s structured daily program includes activities and special events taught under professional supervision by counselors from around the world. All instructional activities are open to every camper, six days per week, five periods per day. No camper will ever find herself closed out of an activity.
Camp Matoaka features a “college league” that lasts throughout the entire season. The campers are divided into four teams that compete in Tuesday and Thursday night games and Sunday afternoon events. Each team has a captain who is a returning, full-season, veteran camper. Although campers are dedicated to their teams, and put forth great efforts to achieve their goals, all rivalry is limited to the college league events. Campers are rewarded for good sportsmanship and learn to win, and lose, graciously
Camp Matoaka emphasizes participation and individual achievement over competition. Any camper who wishes to be a part of the inter-camp teams (gym, ski, softball, soccer, volleyball or tennis) makes the cut. Every camper who tries out for the play is cast; and all campers are invited to participate in the talent show, dance show or music recital.
Staff Overview
Camp Matoaka holds an extensive pre-camp orientation for all staff members. The 10 day orientation helps counselors learn everything from the daily schedule to dealing with homesickness. More than 60% of the Matoaka staff returns each summer and more than a third are former campers. All counselors are college age or older with an overall average staff age of 22.
Setting & Accommodations
Matoaka campers sleep in 19 charming pink bunks with natural wood interiors and old-fashioned front porches. Each bunk has electricity and full bathroom facilities including showers. The smallest bunk accommodates 10 campers and the largest sleeps 20. In addition, each cabin typically houses 4 counselors.
Camp Matoaka offers a regularly scheduled breakfast meal along with bagels, chocolate chip and blueberry muffins, toast, English muffins, and an assortment of fruit. For lunch campers have the scheduled meal along with a full salad bar, sandwich bar, and an assortment of fruit. Dinner is served in the same manner. Matoaka always has fruit, salad, and sandwich bars available for the girls who do not want to eat the scheduled meal.
Safety Standards
Camp Matoaka features a newly constructed health center staffed with four live-in registered nurses. The health center has air conditioning, two exam rooms, and isolation rooms. Additionally, a board certified Pediatrician makes on-site visits on a daily or on-call basis. When it is necessary to seek care off campus, the Mid Maine Medical Hospital is located just nine miles from camp.
Camp Matoaka is accredited by the American Camp Association and meets more than 300 safety standards set forth by the organization.
