Choice Camps Recommendation of Camp Med-O-Lark
Founded in 1946, Camp Med-O-Lark is situated on a pristine three-mile lake in Washington, Maine. Camp Med-O-Larks open and diverse community offers a non-competitive camp experience with no inter-camp games or competitive sports. Known as The Arts Camp of New England, Med-O-Larks focus is primarily fine, performing, and culinary arts supplemented by traditional water and land sports.
The Camp Med-O-Lark community fosters an environment where campers share, accept, and care for each other. With individual development and enrichment promoted first and foremost, there are no best camper awards or competitive incentives. Above all, Med-O-Lark provides a nurturing and enriching environment for campers looking to make friends, learn new skills, and create life-long memories.
Camp Med-O-Lark offers a full elective program where campers choose their entire schedule. Campers choose five activities/workshops that last for two weeks. The camp offers a wide array of activities in performing arts, fine arts, sports, waterfront, and circus. There are typically five activity periods each day in addition to free-time where campers can sample additional activities. While no activities are required, parents can request that their children receive swim lessons, instrumental music lessons, and individualized instruction in other specific areas.
Once a week, campers enjoy a trip day. On trip days, campers choose from a host of activities outside of camp and are able to experience Maines wonderful cultural and natural offerings including beaches, art festivals, hikes, and cruises.
Camp Med-O-Lark prides itself on having an experienced adult staff of professional artists and teachers. With an average staff age of 25, counselors dont just provide campers with support, guidance, and instruction, but with lasting friendship and mentorship. All cabin counselors are at least 20 years old.
Prior to the beginning of camp, Med-O-Lark staff attend a mandatory, intensive, ten day training program. During this ten day training program, staff members receive instruction in camper safety and are familiarized with Med-O-Lark's policies, procedures and values.
Setting & Accommodations
Camp Med-O-Lark is located in the picturesque mid-coastal Penobscot Bay region of Maine. The camp is located about an hour north of Portland, Maine and 25 minutes west of Augusta, Maines capitol city.
Campers live in traditional camp cabins with showers, toilets, and sinks. Cabins have porches for relaxing and windows for fresh air circulation.
Med-O-Lark offers an extensive buffet-style dining experience at every meal. Campers can choose to sit anywhere in the dining hall and eat as much as they want. In addition to a complete main course, lunch and dinner feature a complete salad bar with vegetarian options. Fresh fruit and ice-cold water is available all day long.
Safety StandardsCamp Med-O-Lark has a fully equipped health center conveniently located at the center of camp. The health center is staffed 24 hours a day by at least two medical professionals (registered nurses and/or medical doctors). For more serious illnesses or injuries, the Sheepscot Medical Center is located less than 10 minutes from camp. Camp Med-O-Lark is accredited by the American Camp Association and meets more than 300 safety standards set forth by the organization.
