Choice Camps Recommendation of Camp Moosilauke

Founded in 1904, Camp Moosilauke is one of the oldest private camps in the United States. While times have changed over the past century, campers can still find many land and water activities offered at camp more than 105 years ago. By placing equal importance on land sports, waterfront activities, and outdoor adventure trips, Moosilauke creates an environment where there is no one definition for success. A diverse offering of activities coupled with a staff that goes “beyond the call of duty” makes Camp Moosilauke a great choice for boys looking for a summer adventure.

Today Moosilauke is comprised of 150 boys from 16 states and 5 countries. The camp prides itself on offering quality athletics, a complete waterfront, and comprehensive outdoor program complete with top-flight instruction. Children develop self-esteem through “positive risk taking” within a supportive group of peers. The outcome of a summer at Moosilauke is simple and timeless: a fun and positive experience in which campers are comfortable to be themselves, try new things, and gain confidence and self-esteem in the process.

Program Description

The Camp Moosilauke program provides campers with a mixture of structure and choice. Three morning activity periods are assigned to boys in all age groups. During the afternoons, campers select two elective periods of their choice. Evenings are typically reserved for special activities like fishing, waterskiing, tubing, and team-building games.

Competition in the form of intramural and inter-camp games is a basic part of the Moosilauke experience. Still, every boy who wants to compete – regardless of skills level – makes the team. Because the camp employs many staff members who have coached at the varsity level, competition is always healthy and promotes sportsmanship.

Staff Overview

The Camp Moosilauke staff is comprised of professional educators supported by college-age counselors. Many Moosilauke staff members are former campers who have been associated with the camp for decades.

The Miller family has run Camp Moosilauke since 1938. Owner/director Port Miller grew up at Moosilauke and took over for his father more than thirty years ago. A graduate of Colgate University with a doctorate from Columbia University, Port has written a number of books on children’s decision making.

Setting & Accommodations

Located on more than a mile of shoreline in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, Camp Moosilauke is an extraordinary camp facility. With 300 acres of forests, fields, and lakefront, Moosilauke is able to provide campers with a wide array of land and water activities. The location also gives campers easy access to New England’s best rivers and mountains just a short drive from camp. The camp is about 2.5 hours north of Boston and 4.5 hours from New York City.

Campers are housed in traditional camp cabins with 5-10 other boys and 1-2 counselors. Every cabin is screened and has electricity.

The food at Camp Moosilauke gives campers plenty of choice at each meal. Breakfast includes a main course plus a cereal, yogurt, and fruit bar. At lunch, the main course is accompanied by a salad and soup bar. For dinner, campers get many favorites like pizza, chicken and barbecue.

Safety Standards

Two full-time nurses are always in residence at Moosilauke. A local doctor is always on call, and the Dartmouth-Hitchcock medical facility is less than 30 minutes away.

Camp Moosilauke is accredited by the American Camp Association and meets more than 300 safety standards set forth by the organization.
