Choice Camps Recommendation of Camp Netimus
Camp Netimus for Girls is a traditional summer camp located in northeastern Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains. Founded in 1930, some families have attended Netimus for three generations. The camp’s diverse community encourages friendships not only between bunk-mates but amongst all campers and staff members. A caring and passionate staff takes joy in seeing girls thrive in a secure, wholesome, and safe environment. Above all, the staff and directors at Netimus believe in having fun. For girls looking for a summer camp experience filled with moments of self-discovery and spirited activity, Camp Netimus may be a great fit.
Program Description
Camp Netimus features a free-choice program where campers build their own schedules from more than 40 activity choices. At the beginning of the summer, campers work with staff members to choose their schedules from a mix of land sports, arts and crafts, swimming and boating, hiking and ropes, the performing arts, and horseback riding. Schedules rotate each day between "A Day" and "B Day" activities. The only required activity is three days a week of instructional swim until the camper passes all courses.
Netimus’ program allows campers to choose the level of competition they wish to engage in. The camp features both intramural and inter-camp competitions – all of which are optional for campers.
While Netimus is an all-girls camp, campers get together with brother camp, Camp Shohola, at least once a week. The camps have co-ed dances each week and occasionally compete together in riding, ropes, and canoeing activities.
Staff Overview
Unless they have completed Netimus’ four year counselor training program, all staff members are 21 years or older. Before camp begins, counselors attend a 10-12 day training program that includes sessions on teaching techniques, lesson planning, health and safety, emergency procedures, first aid, department set-up, personnel policies, and understanding cabin dynamics.
Setting & Accommodations
Campers live in traditional camp cabins with eight campers and two counselors. Camp Netimus cabins are wood-framed buildings with screens and sliding windows, bunk beds, electrical lights and outlets. All cabins have toilets and sinks. There is a centrally located shower house (with individual stall showers and a bathroom) as well as a centrally located bathroom facility (with toilets and sinks) which is called the "Bingee." The younger cabin groups have a shower in their cabin.
Meals are served family style in Netimus’ dining hall. In addition to the main entrée, optional choices and a full salad bar are offered at lunch and dinner. Peanut butter and jelly are always available.
Safety Standards
Camp Netimus has an on-site health center staffed 24 hours a day by two registered nurses. The Netimus health center consists of a six bed ward, treatment room, and full bathroom. The camp has a doctor on call at all times located less than 5 miles from camp. In the event of a more serious illness or injury, a hospital is located less than 10 miles from camp.
All lifeguards at the Camp Netimus waterfront are American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certified.
Camp Netimus is accredited by the American Camp Association and meets more than 300 safety standards set forth by the organization.
