Choice Camps Recommendation of Camp Wa-Klo

Located on 2,500 feet of gorgeous lakefront in Jaffrey, New Hampshire, Camp Wa-Klo is a traditional all-girls camp with land and water sports, individual activities, horseback riding, and the creative arts. Surrounded by woods and trees, the camp features beautifully manicured state-of-the-art facilities equipped for both rain and shine. With an experienced staff of educators and professionals, Camp Wa-Klo is a place where girls can have a positive summer camp experience in a safe place where they feel comfortable and cared about.

Camp Wa-Klo is a 4 and 8 week sleep-away camp that also offers a 2 week session called The Nouveau Experience for first-time campers. The Nouveau Experience is a wonderful way to introduce young campers to camp life, meet new friends, and experience all that summer camp has to offer. The family-like atmosphere is welcoming to both new and returning campers. With an outstanding staff, beautiful facilities, and strong programming, Camp Wa-Klo provides a premiere summer camp experience for girls of all ages.

Program Description

Camp Wa-Klo features a combination of structured and free-choice scheduling options for campers depending on age. Campers participate in activities in five core areas: waterfront, land sports, horseback riding, creative arts, and trips.

Girls in grades 1-9 work with Wa-Klo staff members to create their own activity schedules each week. Campers are encouraged to choose a mix of their favorite activities and ones they’ve never tried before.

Finally, girls in grades 10-12 can participate in the Leadership Training Group, a program designed to strengthen leadership skills and create a positive work ethic. Many campers who complete this program go on to be Wa-Klo staff members during college.

While the camp focuses on individual achievement, campers can choose to compete against other camps in swim, tennis, and soccer. To create a non-judgmental and welcoming environment at camp, Wa-Klo campers and staff members wear camp uniforms each day.

Staff Overview

The Wa-Klo staff consists of college students and educators, many of whom return year after year. All staff members are certified and/or skilled in their activity area and have experience working with children.

Camp Wa-Klo boasts a rigorous hiring process where each applicant is personally interviewed by a staff coordinator. Some staff members are international, generally from Europe. Almost all staff members have completed at least one year of college.

Setting & Accommodations

Camp Wa-Klo is nestled in the heart of southwestern New Hampshire at the base of Mount Monadnock between Jaffrey and Dublin on Thorndyke Lake. The camp is only five hours from New York and less than two hours from Boston.

Campers live in comfortable bunks with full showers and bathrooms. Cabins are grouped by age with 6-8 girls living with 2 counselors. Younger bunks tend to house fewer campers (3-4) while older cabins house more campers (8-10).

Meals are a time when the entire camp comes together for conversation, songs, and fun. Girls sit in age groups with two counselors at each table. The counselors switch tables every week so campers have the opportunity to meet more staff members. Vegetarian alternatives, salad, and pasta bars are available in addition to the kid-friendly traditional menu items.

Safety Standards

Camp Wa-Klo features an on-site medical facility called “The Pill Box” that houses two registered nurses. The camp has three local pediatricians on-call and the nearest hospital is just seven miles from camp.

In addition to the on-site medical facility, the majority of Wa-Klo staff members are CPR and first aid certified. More than half the staff is comprised of certified lifeguards. It should also be noted that the camp director is a renowned surgeon.

Camp Wa-Klo is accredited by the American Camp Association and meets more than 300 safety standards set forth by the organization.
