Located on the shores of Lake Hortonia in the town of Hubbardton, Vermont, Camp Wachusett is one of the oldest traditional all-boys overnight camps in New England. The camp features a combination of land and water sports on 40 acres of fields, lakes, trails, and forests.
With fewer than 75 campers each session, Camp Wachusett is best known for an intimate camping environment where every camper receives personal attention. The camp boasts an impressive return rate amongst campers and staff, many of whom come as children and work their way through the staff ranks. With familiar faces returning each summer, campers will surely make friends that last a lifetime at Camp Wachusett.
Program Description
Camp Wachusett’s program is designed to provide each boy with an opportunity to try many new things while focusing on their favorites. Each week campers select two elective activities they would like to pursue for two periods each morning. Campers then receive appropriate instruction in these activity areas. In the afternoon, the camp offers a additional periods of instructional activities and team sports.
Team sports are an important part of the Wachusett program. Campers compete against each other in land and water sports; the camp goes not participate in inter-camp competitions. Sports competitions are typically divided by age with an emphasis on sportsmanship, teamwork, and participation.
Wachusett campers can take advantage of the surrounding countryside through optional hiking and canoeing trips. These trips take campers to the Green Mountains of Vermont, the Adirondacks of New York, and the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Trips emphasize simplicity – food is prepared in the open and shelter is provided by tents.
Staff Overview
Wachusett’s counselors and instructors have typically enjoyed a long association with the camp. The staff is comprised almost entirely of former campers who return as CITs and then full-time counselors. The extremely high staff return rate is a testament to the exceptional camp experience provided by Wachusett.
Setting & Accommodations
Camp Wachusett is surrounded by scenic New England splendor – the Green Mountains lie just to the east of camp with Lake Champlain just a short distance to the west. The camp sits on clean and quiet Lake Hortonia which spreads over 450 acres. The camp is located about an hour south of Burlington, Vermont and two hours northeast of Albany, New York.
Campers are housed in traditional cabins that accommodate 6-8 campers and 1-2 staff. All cabins feature bathrooms and electricity; showers are located just a few steps away. Campers share in cabin responsibilities and clean-up duties.
Camp Wachusett serves many kid-friendly favorites in their spacious dining hall which overlooks the lake.
Safety Standards
Camp Wachusett features an on-site health facility staffed 24 hours by a registered nurse. In the event of a more serious illness or emergency, physicians and hospitals are located a short drive from camp.
All Wachusett lifeguards are American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certified.
