Choice Camps Recommendation of Camp Walden

Camp Walden is a co-ed overnight summer camp set amongst the splendor of the Adirondack Mountains in Diamond Point, New York. Walden’s pristine, spring-fed lake and over one hundred acres of beautiful property is the perfect setting for campers to challenge themselves as they make new friends and create a lifetime of memories. During the summer, Camp Walden campers experience deep and meaningful friendships, explore new challenges and adventures, and excel in their favorite activities.

Walden offers all of the activities of a large camp, but is purposefully small enough so that staff and campers truly get to know each other. The camp’s warm, caring, family atmosphere makes first time campers feel as welcome as campers who have been at Walden for years.

Lifelong friendships are fostered during exciting athletic, adventure, arts, waterfront, and social activities. A mature, well-trained staff is the key to Walden’s caring, supportive environment. Each staff member is carefully selected to provide high quality instruction, instill self-confidence, and urge campers to challenge themselves and support each other.

Program Description

Walden campers participate in land sports, waterfront activities, creative and performing arts and outdoor adventure activities. Most activities are grouped by gender and age so that the instruction is most appropriate. Walden campers enjoy structured programs during which they move with their age group to and from activities. This structure gives each camper the chance to enjoy a well-rounded program while cultivating strong relationships with their peers.

Each day Camp Walden offers one choice period for younger campers and two choice periods for older campers. All campers enjoy one daily optional period, “club”, which gives each camper the opportunity to focus in on one specific area per week. Campers can choose this activity from a wide variety of athletic, adventure, and performing or creative arts offerings. Campers who have completed 6th grade also have one more additional choice period that is offered daily.

After dinner, the entire camp enjoys a free choice period. Walden’s specialty staff awaits campers as they have the chance to devote their energy in areas that most excite them; this includes all land and water activities.

Staff Overview

Camp Walden employs both cabin counselors that spend the day with their campers and activity specialists that focus on instruction at specific specialty areas. Many Walden counselors have grown up at camp and understand the wonderful impact of a Camp Walden summer experience. Senior staff members are professional coaches and educators who work with children all year long.

Setting & Accommodations

Camp Walden is located in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains, just 5 miles from Lake George, NY. Walden is approximately 3 ½ hours from New York City and Boston, 2 ½ hours from Montreal, and one hour from Albany.

Campers live in comfortable cabins with ceiling fans, spacious porches, and clean bathrooms. Each camper gets their own cubby in a separate room.

Meals at Walden are served buffet style and there are always salad bar and vegetarian options available. In addition to the main breakfast entrée, Walden also offers cold and hot cereals, a fruit bar, and yogurt daily. Lunches and dinners consist of healthy, kid-friendly foods. At lunch Walden offers a soup and a salad bar. In addition, a salad bar is available at dinner every night.

Safety Standards

Camp Walden has a new health center staffed by registered nurses and a local pediatrician. In the event of a more serious injury or illness, Walden is located ten minutes from an urgent care facility and twenty minutes from a hospital.

Camp Walden is accredited by the American Camp Association and meets more than 300 safety standards set forth by the organization.
