Choice Camps Recommendation of Camp Walt Whitman
Camp Walt Whitman is a traditional sleep-away summer camp for boys and girls located in Piermont, New Hampshire. With spectacular sports, waterfront, adventure, and arts programs, Walt Whitman is a place where kids have fun and everyone is open to new ideas and experiences. The camp’s impressive 85% camper retention rate is a testament to the fun, positive, and exciting atmosphere created by great staff and enthusiastic campers.
Camp Walt Whitman is known for a warm and inviting environment that welcomes new campers with open arms. To ensure that all campers feel comfortable when arriving at camp, younger campers in grades 1-4 are assigned a “big brother” or “big sister” who is a veteran 7th grade camper. Big brothers and big sisters will call the younger campers in early June before they arrive at camp to answer any questions. This ensures that first-time campers know at least one person when they get to camp – a small but important touch that makes Walt Whitman stand apart as one of New England’s premier co-ed camps.
Program Description
The Camp Walt Whitman program features a combination of scheduled and free-choice activities. Each day, campers have three scheduled activity periods with their cabin or age group. These activities are grouped by gender and feature a mix of instruction and play. In addition, campers participate in two elective periods each day; one is chosen daily and the other is chosen at the beginning of the week. Campers are assisted with their choices by the Walt Whitman staff. Finally, all campers participate in one free swim period each day.
While Camp Walt Whitman is primarily a full-summer experience, first-time campers in 2nd and 3rd grades have the option of attending for a half summer. These campers are housed in separate cabins from full-summer campers and enjoy a complete program with a beginning, middle, and end to provide appropriate pacing and closure.
With the gorgeous White Mountains region of New Hampshire surrounding Walt Whitman, campers participate in many outdoor living activities with their fellow campers. Campers can take advantage of hiking, biking, rafting, and other trips at local hotspots like the Maine seacoast, Acadia National Park, Canada and more.
Staff Overview
The Camp Walt Whitman staff is comprised of mature, professionally trained instructors and counselors. The camp takes a unique approach and employs separate bunk counselors and activity leaders. As a result, the only responsibility of a bunk counselor is to make sure campers are having a great time in a safe environment. Activity leaders can concentrate solely in their specialty, ensuring quality instruction for all age levels.
Many activity leaders are professional coaches and teachers at elementary, middle, high school, and college levels. Campers get the benefit of superb one-on-one instruction in many different sports, arts, and waterfront activities.
Setting & Accommodations
Nestled on 300 acres in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, Camp Walt Whitman sits on crystal-clear Lake Armington. The camp’s extensive hiking and camping program takes full advantage of the natural beauty that surrounds and encompasses the campground. The site is located a just a few miles from the Vermont border and is about 2.5 hours from Boston and 5 hours from New York City.
Campers live in traditional cabins with 10-13 other campers and 2-3 staff members. These staff members accompany the group to each activity throughout the day. Each cabin features electricity, bathrooms, and showers.
The food at Camp Walt Whitman offers lots of fresh fruit, a daily grill (including chicken, hamburgers, and veggie burgers), a twice-daily salad bar, pasta, soup, and a sandwich bar.
Safety Standards
