Choice Camps Recommendation of Camp Waziyatah
Camp Waziyatah is located on 130 acres of beautiful woods and fields bordering Lake McWain in Waterford, Maine. With a long history as one of Maine’s most popular traditional camps, Waziyatah offers a great variety of sports, arts, individual, and waterfront activities. As a testament to camp’s popularity, Camp Waziyatah was featured on the Disney Channel’s popular series “Bug Juice” in the 1990’s. Waziyatah is great for first-time campers who are adjusting to the camp environment and interested in trying new things. Older campers will also find great age-appropriate programming that evolves as they grow older.
Program Description
Camp Waziyatah offers a free-choice program where campers choose their own activities. The camp features three distinct program groups: The Pines (for campers entering grades 2-6), The Grove (for boys entering grades 7-10), and The Hill (for girls entering grades 7-10).
The Pines feature small cabin groups that help the camper establish their place, become secure living away from home, and enjoy learning new skills and abilities. The program is great for first-time campers adjusting to camp life for the first time.
Campers in The Grove and The Hill can take ownership of their activities and help shape their sports, theatre, crafts, and waterfront experiences. Campers are given more responsibilities and a later bed time.
Campers in all age groups can take out-of-camp trips through the Adventure Bound program. Adventure Bound offers a great mix of hiking, climbing, and canoe trips through the beautiful Maine countryside.
Staff Overview
The Camp Waziyatah staff is lead by older, mature Division Directors who supervise each living unit. Older Department Heads supervise each of the six core programming areas. The head staff is supported by college-age counselors and activity leaders who live in bunks with the campers.
Many former Waziyatah campers take part in the camp’s two-year CIT program and continue on to work as counselors. With many returning staff members, Waziyatah traditions live on year-after-year.
Setting & Accommodations
Camp Waziyatah is located on spring-fed Lake McWain in the heart of Maine’s beautiful lakes and mountains region. The site is about an hour north of Portland, Maine and about three hours north of Boston.
Campers live in traditional wood cabins with 6-12 other campers from their grade. Every cabin has electricity, toilets, and sinks. All cabins have attached showers except for teen girls in “The Hill” who use nearby shower huts.
Waziyatah has a great selection of kid-friendly food served buffet-style. In addition to the main entrée, breakfast includes a fresh fruit and yogurt bar while lunch and dinner include an extensive salad bar.
Safety Standards
Camp Waziyatah features a 24 hour health center staffed by two registered nurses. In addition, Waziyatah is affiliated with local doctors for more serious illnesses or injuries. In the event of an emergency, a hospital is less than 20 minutes from camp.
Many Waziyatah staff members are first aid and CPR certified. At the waterfront, all lifeguards are Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certified.
