Choice Camps Recommendation of Camp Wicosuta
Camp Wicosuta is a high-quality, four-week camp for girls located in Hebron, New Hampshire. Wicosuta’s philosophy is based on providing the "3 C's": Confidence, Competence & Community. These ideals are taught through lessons in a physically and emotionally safe community in which campers are challenged to move past their self-set limits. Campers learn these skills in arts and crafts, on the athletic fields, on the hiking trails of the White Mountains, in Newfound Lake, and in their bunks. All Wicosuta girls build lasting friendships, explore a wide range of activities and have fun!
Program Description
Camp Wicosuta offers a well-rounded program that provides opportunities to increase existing skills as well as try new activities. Campers who just completed grades 1-3 have a set program that exposes them to all camp activities. Campers finishing grade 4 have a mixture of pre-scheduled and elective activities. They are required to swim every day, play tennis twice a week, and go to the waterfront twice a week. The rest of their activities are based on their preferences. Girls finishing grades 5 and older have an individual, choice-based program. Campers participate in choice-based activities with other campers of similar ages and are able to change their individual schedules if they would like. The last period of the day, called "selective," allows all campers a chance to choose their final activity of the day.
The Wicosuta schedule is based on an 8-day cycle. Regular program days are designated as A, B or C days. After three days of a regular schedule, campers will participate in either a special event day or go on an out-of-camp trip, followed by another cycle of regular schedule days, and then another special event or trip day.
For campers not quite ready to make the jump into a full camp experience, Wicosuta offers a two week introductory session open to 1st through 5th graders. The two-week camper is exposed to a wide range of traditional camp activities and events while sharing a cabin only with other two-week campers.
Staff Overview
Wicosuta hires staff members who serve as excellent role models from colleges and universities around the world. Each program area is headed by a specialist with many years of coaching and teaching experience. All group counselors are college students. Staff members are sensitive to the needs of first-time campers and are trained to make sure that girls acclimate to the camp environment.
Setting & Accommodations
Camp Wicosuta is located on 100 acres of pristine, wooded land on the shores of Newfound Lake in the foothills of the White Mountains in Bristol, New Hampshire. Wico is 2 hours from downtown Boston, 3 1/2 hours from Montreal and 5 hours from New York City.
Campers live in traditional cabins with full bathroom and shower facilities. There are typically 8-10 campers and 3-4 counselors in each cabin.
The Wicosuta dining hall is alive with songs and cheers. Wicosuta’s food service and chefs provide a large variety of nutritious and well-prepared selections. Alternatives, including vegetarian options, are available at every meal. Two large salad bars, a deli bar, and a daily pasta selection are offered at both lunch and dinner. Snacks during the day and at bedtime include fresh fruit, healthy treats and ice-cream novelties.
Safety Standards
Wicosuta's health center staff consists of four full-time nurses. The health center is open seven days a week, and a nurse is on call 24 hours a day. Wicosuta has an established relationship with a local pediatrician who is on-call daily. Medical specialists, dentists and orthodontists are nearby and will treat campers if necessary.
All waterfront lifeguards are American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certified. All counselors who take overnight trips with campers are wilderness first aid certified.
Camp Wicosuta is accredited by the American Camp Association and meets more than 300 safety standards set forth by the organization.
