Choice Camps Recommendation of Camp Wigwam
Nestled in the foothills of the White Mountains on the sandy shores of Bear Lake, Camp Wigwam offers a traditional summer camp program with particular emphasis on tennis, golf, the arts, and rustic camping along the spectacular trails of the magnificent White Mountain National Forest. Since 1910, Camp Wigwam has remained a thriving, dynamic cultural experience renowned for the high quality of its innovative sports and fine arts programs. Camp Wigwam stresses participation rather than strict competition and allows every camper ample opportunity for choice. This encouraging, supportive atmosphere enables each camper, no matter his interests, the ability to reach his highest potential.
The Wigwam summer camp experience is a very personal one with only four boys and one counselor in each cabin. One seven week session begins in late June and runs through the middle of August, with a five week option within that time frame. With a high percentage of returning staff, experienced administrative personnel, and the involved ownership of the Strauss family, Camp Wigwam fosters individual, physical and emotional growth in a less competitive atmosphere, guiding each camper to live and learn within a community of his peers.
Program Description
At Wigwam, campers choose their activities each Sunday for the coming week. The camp offers land sports, waterfront, and art activities. The program features three activity periods in the morning that are instructional based. In the afternoon, activities are free-choice and recreational based.
With a prime New England location, Camp Wigwam offers an extensive trip and adventure program. Campers get to explore first-hand the rustic terrain of Maine and New Hampshire after completing a basic camp craft course during the first week. Trips include hiking, canoeing, climbing, fishing, kayaking, and more.
Staff Overview
Camp Wigwam has a dedicated staff comprised primarily of mature college age counselors. All staff members undergo an intensive pre-camp orientation and must be at least 19 years old with some college experience.
Wigwam boasts a high return rate amongst staff members. Some senior staff members have been at camp for more than 30 years!
Setting & Accommodations
Camp Wigwam is located in southwestern Maine about 1 hour north of Portland and 2.5 hours north of Boston.

Campers 13 years and older have the option of living in a platform tent for a true camping experience. A centralized 'cedar lined' shower house is available for campers and staff.
Safety Standards
The Wigwam Infirmary is centrally located and well stocked. Two registered nurses live on-site and are available 24 hours per day. The nearest hospital is only eight miles from camp, in Bridgton, Maine.
All waterfront staff members are American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certified lifeguards.
Camp Wigwam is accredited by the American Camp Association and meets more than 300 safety standards set forth by the organization. Camp Wigwam is also a member of the Maine Youth Camping Foundation.
