Choice Camps Recommendation of Camp Winaukee
Camp Winaukee is a private sleep-away camp for boys located on Lake Winnipesaukee in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Winaukee attracts campers who have an interest in improving their sports skills and engaging in fun and spirited competition. With warm days and cool nights, the weather is ideal for summer activities, and the fresh mountain air and low humidity enhance all sporting events.
Winaukee has two separate facilities and programs, offering campers the intimacy of a small camp setting with the breadth and diversity of programming of a larger camp. The Mainland Camp, for boys ages 7 through 12, offers a nurturing and structured program where boys receive quality sports instruction and partake in exciting trips designed especially for younger campers. Winaukee Island Camp is located on a private island just off the Mainland. There, teenage boys participate in athletics and trip programs. The atmosphere at each of the two age-appropriate camps is unique. Each campus is self-contained and features separate athletic facilities, waterfront, dining hall, theater and fleet of boats.
Founded in 1920, Winaukee enjoys a reputation as one of the premier sports and adventure camps in New England. For campers looking for a spirited sports program supported by traditional camp activities, Winaukee offers a unique, one-of-a-kind program with instruction that is unmatched.
Program Description
Winaukee offers a sports-focused program that is age-appropriate. The day is divided into six activity periods, three in the morning and three in the afternoon. The youngest boys are assigned five of their activities each day thus ensuring that they receive instruction in a variety of land and water sports and hobbies. The camp’s youngest campers also have a structured elective period during which they can choose from six to eight pre-selected activities. Campers entering 4th, 5th and 6th grade have four scheduled periods and two elective choices each day. Mainland campers (those entering 2nd to 7th grades) receive daily swim instruction.
As campers get older, they are given more choice. With guidance from the Island director and key staff, Island campers choose their own program, to meet their interests and goals.
Campers participate in inter-camp tournaments with camps in the vicinity. Our goal is for campers to participate and to have fun. There are no try-outs or A and B teams. Every boy has the opportunity to play!
Because some younger campers and their parents may not be comfortable with the full 7 week program, we also offer a 5-week July program. Campers that choose our July option may elect to stay for the remainder of the summer. For families thinking about sleep away camp for next summer, we offer a two-week "Introduction to Sleep Away Camp". Campers enjoy all of our facilities and experience all the activities that we offer. The two-week camp is an ideal preparation for attendance at camp the following summer. This program takes place in August and ends at the same time as the regular summer season.
Staff Overview
Winaukee's senior staff consists of high school and college coaches and teachers, with an average tenure of 15 summers at Winaukee. Key staff members and program heads provide excellent instruction and supervision.
Winaukee's cabin counselors are college students and young teachers. All are specialists in a particular sport or activity. There are no junior counselors or Counselors in Training (C.I.T.'s) on staff. About 70% of the Winuakee staff returns each summer.
Setting & Accommodations
Camp Winaukee's location is spectacular, on 2.5 miles of shoreline on Lake Winnipesaukee, the largest lake in New England, surrounded by the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
Campers live in traditional cabins that have recently been renovated. Campers shower in recently built shower houses on both campuses.
The Winaukee menu features healthy and nutritious meals designed to appeal to young boys. A breakfast bar offers a variety of cereals, fruit, yogurt and other delicious items, in addition to a hot, home-cooked entrée. Two large salad bars and a daily pasta selection are offered along with the entrée at both lunch and dinner. Snacks during the day and at bedtime include fresh fruit, homemade cookies and ice cream. Winaukee accommodates campers with food allergies.
Safety Standards
Camp Winaukee's health center is open 24 hours a day. The health center staff consists of five registered nurses (three on the Mainland and two on the Island), and a physician who lives at camp. In the event of a more serious illness or emergency, Winaukee has arrangements with local medical specialists, dentists and orthodontists who will treat our boys if necessary.
Camp Winaukee is accredited by the American Camp Association and meets more than 300 safety standards set forth by the organization.
