Choice Camps Recommendation of Giant Campus: UCSD

Unlike some computer and technology camps, Giant Campus Summer Camps promote a healthy balance between computer time and physical activities. Each day is filled with short breaks, lunch and play times. During these times, there are a variety of activities available, depending on the specific campus location and weather. For the residential participant, there are additional times in the evening when they may have opportunities for sports, games and extra time on the computers, as well as network gaming time.

Guided by Giant Campus’ robust curriculum development model, each course features a series of increasingly complex hands-on projects. In each project, fundamental concepts are woven together so that learners make key connections as they progress. Frequent practice exercises help reinforce newly established skills, while end-of-project challenge assignments provide powerful opportunities for students to apply what they have learned in new contexts.

At each of the 50 Tech, Digital Media and Gaming Camps, Giant Campus inspires kids and teens with technology while engaging them in 21st century skills such as creativity, problem solving, communication and collaboration. By taking this approach, Giant Campus believes they can have an even greater impact on our campers' long-term success.

Program Description

Participants in Giant Campus’ Tech, Digital Media and Gaming Camps spend approximately half the day working on their own personal projects. Each day also includes structured collaborative activities where teens have the opportunity to share their strengths and learn from their peers. In addition, there is time each day for outdoor recreation and having fun with new friends. Participants in our Virtual Camps have daily live sessions with demonstrations and receive one-on-one help from an online instructor. Camps are highly interactive with fun daily projects.

For residential programs, night facilitators focus solely on achieving productive and safe evenings and must stay in the dorms with the students. Night facilitators may throw a LAN party, stage Rock Band® competitions, initiate night laser tag, plan an ice cream social or supervise other recreation in the lounge.

Staff Overview

Giant Campus’ expert recruiters hire instructors based on their ability to teach technology with enthusiasm, relate to kids of all ages and be a healthy role model for your child. Their instructors value higher education and the inquisitive mind, bringing stellar curriculum to life by contributing their valuable insights to each camper’s experience. Each program director has extensive training in supervision, program facilitation, healthcare and camp safety. Many directors are professional educators, and all of them are passionate about technology education and kids.

Setting & Accommodations

Giant Campus’ dorms are self-contained and locked at all times, restricting access from outside. The directors make sure the appropriate number of staff spend the night to maintain the high staff-to-student ratio consistent with levels during the day. Experienced and trained staff are on duty 24 hours a day, offering guidance, assistance and supervision. If, for any reason, a participant needs to run an errand away from the group, a Giant Campus staff member always accompanies him or her. Participants are not allowed to roam the campus on their own at any time of the day or night.

Safety Standards

Giant Campus is certified by the American Camp Association in more than 300 standards of health and safety at our flagship location at the University of Washington. Since Giant Campus opened for business in 1997, there have been no instances or allegations of improper behavior by any member of the Giant Campus staff – making our program truly exceptional in both health and personal safety.
