Choice Camps Recommendation of Greenwood Trails
Set in the foothills of the beautiful Berkshires in Winsted, Connecticut, Greenwood Trails is based on the site of one of the earliest summer camps, Camp Delaware, established in 1921. This traditional, co-ed camp recognizes that each child is an individual and encourages campers to “choose their own trail” and celebrate their individuality while still recognizing common ground with others. Genuine friendships are established through the core values of respect, caring, integrity and courage. Fostering community spirit and developing confidence and character are the basis for lifelong memories.
Greenwood Trails specializes in the first time camper. The tailored transition program helps campers feel welcome and included in the camp family.
Program Description
Greenwood Trails strongly emphasizes the opportunity for each camper’s individual schedule. Camper’s choose four of their six daily activities in either a Major (weekly) or Minor (daily) choice. The other two activities encourage group bonding and are programmed by cabin, balancing the individualized schedules. Swimming is a daily activity grouped by cabin and the second group activity can be any area of camp.
Major activities (twice daily) are designed for campers to invest themselves in a certain activity, such as sports, adventure, theatre, pottery, or photography. Campers participate in Majors all week to ensure advanced involvement and instruction to learn in a meaningful way. Minor activities (twice daily) are chosen every day to maximize campers’ experiences and get them to try new things or participate in activities they already enjoy. With over 40 choices, there is something for every interest.
Special evening activities are planned every night for the entire camp, including campfires, shows, games, scavenger hunts, and surprise performances. Evening events allow campers more opportunities to extend friendships between cabins and develop a strong sense of community and build lasting memories.
Staff Overview
All counselors are handpicked after participating in an extensive interviewing process. The most important qualities of a Greenwood Trails counselor are enthusiasm and the willingness to be a positive role model. All staff is required to complete training prior to camp and complete a weeklong orientation. International staff are represented to add to the “camp experience.”
Setting & Accommodations
Greenwood Trails is set on over 100 acres of sprawling hiking trails and winding paths that highlight the picturesque surroundings of the Berkshires. Extensive sports, arts, adventure, and aquatic facilities are updated yearly and new facilities are added every year. In addition to the volleyball pits, softball field, batting cages, archery range and ping pong tables, the basketball court, tennis courts, skate park and street hockey court have been newly renovated. A larger-than-Olympic-sized pool and pool deck are also newly renovated.
Traditional cabins are “clean and comfortable” with electricity, bathrooms, and showers with hot & cold running water. Each bunk includes 6-12 campers and 2 counselors.
Campers eat together in the spacious dining hall. In addition to a balanced menu, a fully stocked salad bar is available at lunch at dinner. Campers with special dietary needs will be provided with vegetarian options. Greenwood Trails is nut-free to be conscious of campers with allergies.
Safety Standards
A Health Center is staffed by a registered nurse and also has a doctor on call 24 hours a day. In the event of a serious injury or illness, Greenwood Trails is 5 minutes from Winsted Health Center and 15 minutes from Charlotte Hungerford Hospital.
Greenwood Trails is a nut-free to accommodate children with nut allergies. Parents are discouraged from sending food in care packages due to any other allergies campers may have.
