Choice Camps Recommendation of Lanakila

Located on beautiful Lake Morey in Vermont, Lanakila is a traditional summer camp for boys in grades 3-8. Through a variety of land, water, and individual activities, campers explore new interests and discover new strengths in a supportive camp community. You won’t find any cell phones, computers, or iPods at Lanakila – instead, campers focus on the beauty of nature and bonding with each other.

Lanakila is part of the Aloha Foundation family of camps, an organization that has been ranked in the top ten nationally by USA Today and Family Life magazines. Lanakila's non-competitive atmosphere and the camp’s belief that "there are many ways to be a man" allow children the chance to experiment with new activities and experience the joy that comes from meeting challenges.

Program Description

Lanakila's free-choice program challenges boys to create summer days that combine skill-building and outdoor living with lots of fun. Campers enjoy many traditional camp activities on land and in the water. Camping and tripping also highlight the "most favorite activities" list at Lanakila, as campers of all ages and abilities take part in biking, hiking, and canoe trips from 1-5 days long.

Lankila campers can choose to achieve special "Viking Honors" as they develop new skills, or create a particular summer focus that will help them succeed and have fun.

Staff Overview

Most Lanakila counselors and staff members are college undergraduates or graduates who come from all across the country and from many nations around the world.

Lanakila counselors and staff receive intensive training before camp opens, and undergo background checks by an independent agency prior to hiring. Most have advanced expertise in their chosen activity or field.

Setting & Accommodations

Lankila boys live in tent or cabin families of three campers and a counselor. Camp units composed of around ten tents and cabins share a washhouse wit hot water showers and flush toilets.

Safety Standards

Lanakila is staffed 24 hours a day with appropriate health personnel. A physician is on call at all times and EMT service is within minutes of camp. In case of a more serious illness or emergency, the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center is located 20 minutes from camp.

Lanakila is accredited by the American Camp Association and meets more than 300 safety standards set forth by the organization.
