Dont let the name fool you with an extensive array of programming, Maine Arts Camp is much more than just an arts camp. Campers focus on activities in the visual arts, theater, dance, technology, individual sports, and special interests. The program emphasizes a non-competitive environment and features no team sports.

Campers at Maine Arts Camp, formerly Bethel Camp for the Arts, get to choose from more than 60 different activities over a two week session. Campers select ten activities and attend five each day. The program is entirely free-choice as campers choose their own schedule at the beginning of each session. The non-competitive nature of the program leads to a laid-back atmosphere where creativity and learning thrive.
Each night there is a camp-wide evening activity. These activities include a theatre night, campfires, cabin games, and more. In addition, campers take trips to local water parks, golf courses, and places of interest.
The staff at Maine Arts Camp is made up primarily of professionals and teachers supported by college-age counselors. The camp specifically targets older, experienced professionals with extensive expertise in their field of instruction. Maine Arts Camp instructors focus on technique and process to help campers develop their skills and enhance their abilities.
Rick Mades, the Director at Maine Arts Camp, has a broad background in summer camping. Rick has visited more than 170 overnight camps as the owner of a camp referral service since 1994. Ricks experiences as a tennis director, cabin counselor, and teacher have allowed him to craft a truly unique and enriching experience at Maine Arts Camp.
All counselors are a minimum of 19 years old and have completed at least one year of college. The average staff age is 23 and more than half return each summer. The camp boasts a 3:1 camper-to-counselor ratio.
Setting & Accommodations
Maine Arts Camp is hosted on the campus of Gould Academy, a beautiful college preparatory high school in the small town of Bethel, Maine. Nestled on the eastern edge of the White Mountains, the campus is surrounded by breathtaking panoramic views that you would expect in northern New England. The camp makes great use of the town of Bethel, which is known for diverse recreational activities and a growing art community. The campus is approximately 1.5 hours north of Portland and about 3.5 hours north of Boston.
Campers live in Gould Academy dormitories with direct access to bathrooms and showers on their floor. The dormitories are professionally managed by the school and offer a safe, clean environment for campers to live. Campers live in doubles, triples, and suites with counselors never more than a few doors away. Boys and girls live in separate buildings.
Maine Arts Camp has access to many top-notch Gould facilities that compliment the programs instruction-driven structure. The campus features art studios, galleries, a fully-equipped theatre, dance studio, music studio, and state-of-the-art technology facilities. The sports arena and field house offer indoor and outdoor tennis courts, racquetball, yoga, and more. In addition, the nearby North Pond and Androscoggin River provide great kayaking and canoeing opportunities.
Safety StandardsAll activities at Maine Arts Camp are supervised by well-trained instructors. There are two nurses on campus at all times to ensure safety.
