Choice Camps Recommendation of Spanish Learning Abroad: Seville
For students looking for an intimate journey into Spanish language and culture, no programs are more authentic than Spanish Learning Abroad’s Immersion Programs. The program isn’t a traditional teen tour – instead, students actually live with Spanish host families while attending language classes at a local school. Students get a taste of Spain (literally) by eating home-cooked meals with their host families. With an unmatched passion to share their culture, many past program participants identify the host families as the most influential element of the trip.
In addition to school and family life, students get to tour many of Spain’s historical and cultural hot-spots. Destinations include Granada, Cadiz, and Huelva. The trip program exposes students to Spanish art, history, dancing, and food. These themes are revisited during daily class sessions with other program participants.
For students looking for an authentic taste of Spanish language and culture, Spanish Learning Abroad programs may be a perfect match.
Trip Description
The Spanish Learning Abroad Immersion Program begins with a three day tour of Madrid and nearby sites of great historical importance like Segovia, Toledo, and Cordoba. These days give students an orientation and introduction into cultural mores and traditions. Once students are comfortable in the country, they live with a Spanish-speaking host family.
Students take classes at Los Geranios, a private language school in the city of Dos Hermanas. Upon arrival, students are tested for placement and grouped by levels of proficiency. Participants attend four 40 minute classes each morning. The Spanish classes are designed to develop students’ vocabulary, applied grammatical skills, and knowledge of the history and culture of Spain. The classes also provide students the opportunity to ask questions about phrases they have heard in their conversations with their host family. When classes are finished students go home for lunch, the main meal of the day.
After lunch, students often take a siesta before evening activities begin. Evening activities are designed to expose students to a wide variety of typical features of Spanish culture and customs. Students visit historical sites, art galleries, theatres, movies, dance classes, and more. After evening activities, students return to their host families for a late dinner and family time.
Staff Overview
The trip is overseen by program supervisors who provide support for students throughout their experience. The staff is comprised of leaders who have extensive language backgrounds. Program supervisors conduct all afternoon trips and interact with students daily.
Setting & Accommodations
Known as “The Dos,” students live and learn in the town of Dos Hermanas just a few metro stops from Seville. Full of young people, Dos Hermanas has a vibrant social life which allows students to make many friends easily.
