Trip Description
Experience the rich landscape, diverse culture and life-changing community service with the Travel for Teens South Africa Community service trip. In addition to broadening your world view by volunteering with several local township schools, take in the wildlife and explore the region in hopes of seeing the Big 5: lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards and rhinos. Travelers will relive history with visits to museums and national landmarks. The unique safari and community service experience will cultivate lasting memories and friendships as well as a self-fulfilling sense of achievement.
Staff Overview
All staff members undergo extensive interviewing, training, and ongoing evaluation. All counselors are certified in first-aid and CPR. Very few new staff are hired each year due to high retention rate. Trip leaders do not lead a trip without prior experience as a TFT counselor. With few exceptions, students are fully supervised on all of our journeys. Most staff members have lived in the countries they are leading each trip in and are able to offer deeper insights into the culture and lifestyle.
Setting & Accommodations
In Cape Town travelers will stay at a locally owned 3 star hotel. Next are the bungalows on a bluff overlooking a bay near Cinsta, outside East London on the Wild Coast during the service trip. Travelers will stay in modern log cabins near Kruger National park for game drive days and for the last night will stay in a 4 star hotel outside Pretoria.
Safety Standards
Travelers are under staff supervision at all times except select hour to hour and a half shopping trips. While on the mountains professionals supervise and teach correct technique to avoid injury. Travel for teens analyzes every aspect and detail of each trip and goes over contingency plans and emergency numbers for each country. Each site and hotel is visited and approved before bringing a group and first aid kits are always on hand. English-speaking doctors are on hand most of the time, but when they are not the bilingual staff act as interpreters.
