Choice Camps Recommendation of Waukeela Camp for Girls

Waukeela Camp for Girls is a traditional all-girls summer camp located in New Hampshire’s White Mountains region. With a program that exposes campers to a wide array of arts, sports, waterfront, and equestrian activities, no two days at Waukeela are ever alike. ‘Waukeela Girls’ enjoy more than 85 years of tradition through songs, dances, performances, and poems that have been passed down from generation to generation. The camp features no competitive sports and campers wear green and white each day to celebrate traditional camp colors.

Waukeela Camp for Girls is best known for an extensive outdoor exploration program that takes girls on adventures throughout New England. Waukeela Girls are not afraid to get their nails dirty during hikes, canoe trips, climbing adventures, and more. During these trips, tight-knit bonds are formed amongst campers and with the passionate Waukeela staff. For girls looking for an inviting and welcoming community that loves to explore New England’s great outdoors, Waukeela Camp for Girls may be a great fit.

Program Description

Waukeela Camp for Girls offers a structured program with opportunities for free choice. There are five periods each day with one period dedicated to swimming. Throughout the summer, campers receive instruction in the creative arts, performing arts, land sports, swimming, boating, and horseback riding. The program is designed to expose campers to all 18 activities that camp has to offer. To emphasize a non-competitive environment, there are no team sports at Waukeela.

Surrounded by New England wilderness, Waukeela Camp for Girls runs a particularly strong outdoor adventures program. Trips range in length from one day to three weeks and include hiking, canoeing, kayaking, white-water canoeing, and rock climbing. During wilderness trips, campers learn basic outdoor skills like starting a fire and cooking over an open flame.

Staff Overview

Waukeela staff members are at least 18 years old and have completed high school.

Setting & Accommodations

Waukeela’s rustic facilities occupy 45 acres on the shores of Crystal Lake in Eaton Center, New Hampshire. The camp is located approximately two hours north of Boston.

Campers are housed in traditional cabins with 4-5 girls and 1-2 staff members. These smaller cabins provide a more intimate experience where girls get to know each other very well. Cabins do have electricity; bathrooms and showers just a few steps away.

Meals at Waukeela feature many kid favorites like pasta, chicken, fresh salads, and homemade breads and desserts. Meals are served family style, with the entire camp eating together at long picnic tables. The tables are set and served and cleared by campers who take turns as waitresses, with every girl sharing in these responsibilities over the course of each session.

Safety Standards

Waukeela has a registered nurse on site at all times and a four bed infirmary to house children who are sick or injured. A camp physician and dentist are always on call less than five miles away from camp. In the event of a more serious emergency, Memorial Hospital is located 10 miles from camp.
